Sm-Nd isotope systematics in deep-sea sediments: clay-size versus coarser fractions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sm-Nd studies were carried out on Last Glacial and Holocene sediments from the Labrador Sea. Three grain-size fractions were analyzed for each sediment: the clay-size fraction (<2 μm), the fine cohesive silts (2-10 μm) and the coarse silts (10-63 μm). In most cases, Sm-Nd signatures are different from one grain-size to another. In addition, different Sm-Nd signatures are derived from the clay-size fractions compared to the cohesive silt fraction, indicating that the cohesive fraction is heterogeneous and that distinct origins in terms of source-areas are implied. Silt fractions record the influence of supplies from the North American Precambrian Shield, whereas clay-size fractions (<2 μm) are more sensitive to sedimentary input from the Eastern Basins, in relation with deep currents. Coupling Sm-Nd studies on silt and clay fractions may be a powerful tool to unravel the evolution of deep circulations versus detrital supplies.

Rare-earth elements and Nd and Pbisotopes as source indicatorsfor Labrador Sea clay-size sediments during Heinrich event 2
Elemental abundances and Nd and Pb isotope ratios were determined on samples from the carbonate-free, clay-size fractions of sediments from intervals above, within, and below Heinrich event 2 (H-2) in core HU87-9 from the Northwest Labrador Sea slope. In HU87-9, rare-earth element (REE) distributions and elemental concentrations within the H-2 event are distinct from those outside this event. e...
متن کاملSize fractionation, reproducibility and provenance of helium isotopes in north-equatorial pacific pelagic clays
Helium isotope compositions were measured in late Quaternary pelagic clays from the North Equatorial Pacific, where terrestrial and extra-terrestrial end member components are identified and quantified in different grain size populations. The results provide important constraints on the nature of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) in sedimentary environments and on their application as consta...
متن کاملCurrent transport versus continental inputs in the eastern Indian Ocean: Radiogenic isotope signatures of clay size sediments
[1] Analyses of radiogenic neodymium (Nd), strontium (Sr), and lead (Pb) isotope compositions of clay‐ sized detrital sediments allow detailed tracing of source areas of sediment supply and present and past transport of particles by water masses in the eastern Indian Ocean. Isotope signatures in surface sediments range from −21.5 ("Nd), 0.8299 (Sr/Sr), and 19.89 (Pb/Pb) off northwest Australia ...
متن کاملSm-Nd systematics of Earth are inconsistent with a superchondritic Sm/Nd ratio
The relationship between the compositions of the Earth and chondritic meteorites is at the center of many important debates. A basic assumption in most models for the Earth’s composition is that the refractory elements are present in chondritic proportions relative to each other. This assumption is now challenged by recent Nd/Nd ratio studies suggesting that the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) might ...
متن کاملGrain Size Effect on Trace Metals in Contaminated Sediments Along the Iranian Coast of the Caspian Sea
Sediments are integral and inseparable parts of the aquatic environments, so any environmental program concerning water quality would be incomplete without the proper study of its sediments. The elemental concentration of sediments not only depends on anthropogenic and lithogenic sources, but also upon the textural characteristic, organic matter content, mineralogical composition and deposition...
